Wednesday’s MLB slate features plenty of betting opportunities but there are a pair of underdogs looking to take a bite out of their opponents. Let’s get down and cash those tickets!
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Mets
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 – 7:10 PM ET at Citi Field
Nobody expected very much out of the Red Sox this season but what has transpired over the first five games has been nothing short of a disaster. Boston’s starting pitching has gotten wrecked, which isn’t completely shocking because most, if not all, would normally be toiling in the minor leagues. Last night was more of the same as they bowed to the Mets, 8-3, in the second of four as Red Sox starting pitcher, Matt Hall, failed to make it through the third inning.
Nathan Eovaldi is the closest thing the Sox have to a real starter because, well, he is a real starter. And the 30-year-old Houston native will get the start tonight as he looks to build upon his impressive debut of the 2020 season in which he allowed one run on five hits scattered over six innings in what resulted in Boston’s only win of the season, a 13-2 trouncing of the Orioles.
Mets ace, Jacob deGrom, had his usual nasty stuff in his 2020 debut when he struck out eight and held the Braves scoreless over five innings in a 1-0 New York victory. deGrom will likely do what he routinely does and that’s mowing down batters.
However, the Red Sox have several things going for them in this spot. First, they have a legitimate starter taking the hill who will allow the pen to rest for at least five innings. Second, Boston has thumpers in their lineup and any one of them could touch deGrom to get a few runs, build confidence, and win this game. But lastly, the MLB odds I’m seeing over at 5Dimes makes it impossible for me to resist backing Boston at +177 in my MLB picks. The Sox won their only game of the season with Eovaldi on the bump and could very well do so again at odds that are simply too generous to ignore.

Kansas City Royals vs. Detroit Tigers
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 – 7:10 PM ET at Comerica Park
The Royals will try to rebound after dropping a 4-3 decision to their Central division rivals, the Detroit Tigers, last night by sending their Opening Day pitcher, Danny Duffy, to the mound. Duffy went four-plus innings and surrendered two runs on three hits before he was removed in a 2-0 loss to the Indians. It was a decent enough start for the 31-year-old southpaw against a potent Cleveland lineup and he should be even better this time around.
Matthew Boyd will get the starting assignment for the Tigers tonight after surrendering four runs on six hits over five innings in a 7-1 loss to the Reds. Last year the 29-year-old lefty went 9-12 with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. In 19 career starts against Kansas City, Boyd is 5-9 with a 6.46 ERA, last facing the Royals on September 5th, when he allowed three runs on 10 hits over six-plus innings in a 6-4 Tigers’ win.
The bottom line here is value. The Tigers are not a very good club yet the oddsmakers, at many of the best online sportsbooks, are making them north of -130 favorites. Personally, I’ll take Duffy over Boyd as my starter and you can flip a coin as to which of these two pedestrian-at-best lineups is better than the other. And while this edition of the Kansas City Royals won’t inspire any recollections of their championship season in 2015, they certainly aren’t matched up against a team in the Tigers that scares anyone.
Let’s do what we always do and grab the cash when the value is begging us to do so. The Royals are getting +120 at Intertops and that looks like a line worth betting.
